“Ascension” by David Huffman, is a 45-foot-tall glass piece that defines the front entrance of 17th & Broadway, a residential tower by SCB. The glass piece that incorporates custom color frit, spans two floors in height and is angled out towards the street from bottom to top. Making sure the piece was activated by light at night was our objective. Through an iterative process and various mockups, at full scale, we came up with a solution to backlight the entirety of the glass panel in order to achieve an even luminosity to allow the piece to be legible at night. Key concerns involved evaluation of the pitch, color and intensity of different LED panels that are installed on a backer panel behind the glass. Avoiding visible pixelation was achieved through the placement of a translucent interlayer between the glass and LED’s. this was all achieved within a depth of 5”.
